9th European Film FestivalAfter two years of online streaming during Covid the 9th European Film Festival in South Africa this year provides a much-anticipated return to theatres for those who desire the full cinema experience on the big screen.

The festival presents a select curation of 16 multi-award winning films from Europe that have not yet been released in South Africa.  Between 13 to 23 October 2022 each film will have a single screening at Ster-Kinekor’s The Zone in Rosebank, Johannesburg, and a single screening at The Labia in The Gardens, Cape Town.

Festival co-director Magdalene Reddy notes: Cinemas countrywide have endured sustained periods of closure and crippling seating restrictions during Covid times.  As film lovers we are grateful they survived and are fully functioning again. While the festival celebrates films and the making of films, we also honour the theatres that bring these films to life for us – please support your local cinemas, enjoy the festival films on the big screen!”

Variety of films on offer

For those unable to get to the cinemas, this year’s hybrid model also allows for watching the films at home via the online streaming service which is free.

Films on the programme this year include Ali and Ava, a compelling contemporary love story written and directed by one of the UK’s most distinctive cinematic voices, Clio Barnard; I’m Your Man, a spunky German sci-fi dramedy which asks good questions about what humans want in relationships and if AI beings should have rights; Klondike, a Ukrainian film which exposes the absurdity of war and the travails of parents-to-be living near the Russian border; The Good Boss, a Spanish film starring Javier Bardem which won six awards at the 36th Spanish Goya Film Awards, and was the Spanish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards; and Do Not Hesitate, a Dutch psychological thriller with outstanding performances from a young cast and a tight, taut storyline which earned it selection as the Dutch entry for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.
