Apple Music African Legends playlists free trial

In celebration of Africa Day on the 25th of May Apple Music has launched Apple African Legends, a hub which offers a rich collection of music from across the continent, featuring much loved African artists.

The Apple African Legends hub consists of Essentials Playlists, Essentials Albums, Classic Singles, A Spotlight On and a dedicated Playlist with 50 of the top African songs of all time.

Hand-picked range of artists

Africa is home to a colourful tapestry of musical styles, from the soulful sounds of folk guitarist Vusi Mahlasela and the funky Afrobeat of Nigerian William Onyeabor to Algerian singer Khaled with his pop and rai style of music.

To honour this legacy of rhythms on Africa Day, Apple Music have hand-picked a broad range of artists, including the likes of Cesaria Evora (Cape Verde), Lucky Dube (South Africa), Fela Kuti (Nigeria) and others from all corners of Africa.

The Essentials Playlists feature the soothing melodies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa), Mali’s Amadou and Mariam, the rich voice of Angélique Kidjo (Benin) and South Africa’s own Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba and her township-inspired Afro jazz. There is music from more than 20 other epic African artists, including King Sunny Ade (Nigeria – African pop, Jùjù) and Johnny Clegg with his Afro pop anthems.

Rediscover the roots of African music in Essentials Albums with Abdullah Ibrahim and Congolese Papa Wemba’s rumba and soukous styled album.

The Spotlight On contains a quintessential selection of albums by a specific musician, currently showcasing the timeless work of Youssou N’Dour.

Apple Classic Singles offers hits such as Brenda Fassie’s Vulindela, Mory Kante’s Yeke Yeke, Miriam Makeba’s Pata Pata and a whole lot more.
