ComUnity Festival, a driving force in Cape Town’s vibrant youth scene, returns on 26 April 2025 at The Ostrich. In celebration of Freedom Day (27 April), this 12-hour showcase unites musical talent, cutting-edge fashion, and local cuisine to honour democracy, freedom, and South Africa’s rich culture.
The ComUnity Festival makes its debut at The Ostrich this year, transitioning from its longtime home at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. Having hosted global music events like Kaytranada, Anjunadeep, and Black Coffee, The Ostrich represents an exciting new chapter for ComUnity. With a larger capacity and a history of iconic performances, this venue sets the stage for the festival’s most ambitious celebration yet.
“Our mission goes beyond entertainment. We’re creating a cultural playground where young people can freely express themselves, network, and elevate each other,” says Vincent Manzini, co-founder of the ComUnity Festival.
The Sound of a Generation
The 2025 lineup boasts a powerhouse musical showcase headlined by multi-award-winning, platinum-selling hip-hop icon Cassper Nyovest, SAMA-winning producer and DJ MORDA (of the acclaimed duo Black Motion famed for their Afro-house artistry, pictured below), and the rapidly rising Scotts Maphuma—whose fusion of soulful vocals and Amapiano rhythms has garnered a dedicated following. Beyond these marquee acts, festival-goers can dive into an eclectic mix of sounds spanning everything from gqom and deep house to experimental electronic, Afro-pop, and alternative R&B.
Each stage will be meticulously curated to celebrate the complexity of South Africa’s vibrant music scene—showcasing everything from driving basslines and percussive rhythms to melodic vocal performances and cutting-edge production techniques.
Fit Check Please
Fashion enthusiasts can expect a bold showcase of fresh, daring designs straight from Mzansi’s rising designers. From unapologetic streetwear to experimental couture, every collection confidently blends local style with global edge, defining the nation’s cutting-edge style scene.
“The last ComUnity was what the young and free describe as a ‘jump.’ We partnered with brands that understand culture is not just a passive element, it’s an intricate and essential part of who we are and who we aspire to be. Through conversation, we came together at Culture Check to explore entrepreneurship, finance, and how young people can leverage opportunities with partners like FNB,” says Loyiso Mdebuka, co-founder of ComUnity.
Food: Kasi Street Culture
Food lovers can indulge in bold, street-inspired fare from emerging local culinary creators like Umlilo and Smoked by Buys. Drawing on time-honoured staples such as pap, chakalaka, and braaied meats, these innovators remix tradition with modern flair—infusing South Africa’s diverse food scene with an urban twist. Expect new takes on classics, where every bite celebrates the country’s rich culinary heritage while pushing boundaries and taste buds alike.
Community Empowerment: Bridges for Music
A cornerstone of this year’s festival is the partnership with Bridges for Music—ComUnity’s official advocacy initiative dedicated to championing emerging South African talent. Bridges for Music is an organisation that provides underserved communities with education, mentorship, and performance opportunities, empowering artists to shape the sounds of tomorrow. Many of these up-and-coming DJs—who play at events such as We House Sundays, a renowned Sunday gathering in Cape Town known for spotlighting fresh talent and global house influences—are steadily gaining recognition at the country’s leading music events.
Hospitality Experience: The Vibe, Elevated
This year, ComUnity Festival introduces an exclusive hospitality experience, perfect for those looking to elevate their festival enjoyment. Available from midday, guests will enjoy personalised table service by dedicated waitstaff, ensuring seamless vibes throughout the event.
