May marks the last hike in the popular Falke Full Moon Hike series of the season at Delvera Farm outside Stellenbosch. The final Full Moon Hike takes place on 18 May, 2019.
Spectacular sunsets and moon rises
Sponsored by sock specialist Falke, the 9.75km marked circle route through the vineyards starts at the Trail Centre. From here hikers can enjoy the unique experience of hiking through the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy and Yellowwood forest to the top of Klapmutskop – where you can absorb the spectacular sunsets and moon rises which take place at 6pm.
Starting from the Dirtopia Trail Centre, no later than 5pm, it takes approximately 90 minutes to reach the top. Hikers are therefore advised to arrive as early as possible from 4pm to get the full experience before sunset. Farm vehicles are available to transport children and elderly hikers to the start of the shorter 4,5km route from the famous Pepper Tree.
The cost is R100 for adults and R50 for children under the age of 10 and includes shuttles, permits and a map.
It’s advised that you wear comfortable hiking shoes and socks, since you will be climbing a mountain. Torches (which are also for sale at Trail Centre) and warm clothing are recommended for the walk down.
Bookings should be made in advance, as space is limited. You’re welcome to pack your own picnic to enjoy on top of Klapmutskop. The Wingerd Vista restaurant on the farm will also be open till late, should you wish to order food or drink on your return to the Trail Centre.
