Bookmark 22 to 25 March when the South Peninsula Annual Book Festival’s Blown Away by Books showcase gets underway. Now in its third year, the festival, hosted by libraries of the Deep South – Fish Hoek, Masiphumelele and Ocean View, aims to showcase our world class local authors, pay tribute to the art of writing, promote reading and celebrate National Library week.
This year’s line-up of more than 20 authors They include Mike Nicol, Sally Andrew, Mark Winkler, Sindiwe Magona, Xolisa Tshongolo, Pippa Green, Marianne Thamm, Philippa Kabali-Kagwa, Jolyn Phillips, Nancy Richards, John Fredericks and Andy Mason.
‘Crime and Wine’, writing workshops, interviews
Highlights include the opening night Crime and Wine hosted by Mike Nicol. A writing workshop led by Maire Fisher and Rahla Xenopoulos. Pippa Green interviewing Marianne Thamm and Philippa Kabali-Kagwa. John Fredericks (writer of Noem my Skollie) appearing with Andrew Brown and Don Pinnock. On the evening of Saturday 25 March Melanie Verwoerd will talk to Helen Zille about her autobiography Not without a fight.
Wednesday 22, March, 18:30-19:30 – Mike Nicol (Panel leader), Sam Wilson, Karin Brynard, Sally Andrew. Crime and Wine: Sam Wilson, Karin Brynard and Sally Andrew, three of South Africa’s top crime writers are to be interrogated by Nicol “The King of SA Crime Fiction” (BBC Radio 4)
Thursday 23, March, 18:30-19:30 – Máire Fisher (Panel Leader), Mark Winkler, Tracey Farren. Off the wall: Maire Fisher chats with Tracey Farren and Mark Winkler about their unconventional novels.
Friday 24, March, 9:00-13:00 -Máire Fisher, Rahla Xenopoulos – Writing workshop: Rahla Xenopoulos and Máire Fisher invite you to join them for a 4-hour creative writing workshop. Bring your favourite pen and a notebook filled with blank pages. There will be plenty of time for writing and the opportunity to hear what others have written. (limited to 25, so book)

10:00-11:00 Sindiwe Magona – Storyhour: Master storyteller Sindiwe Magona will be entertaining the children with her unique style of storytelling.
18:30-19:30 – Pippa Green (Panel leader), Marianne Thamm, Philippa Namutebi Kabali-Kagwa Memoir: Pippa Green in conversation with the Marianne Thamm and Philippa Kabali-Kagwa about the trials and tribulations of writing ones memoir.
Saturday 25 March, 10h00-11h00 Book Dash Books – Book dash Storytime: The Book Dash organisation will be hosting a storytime as well as promoting their programme and books. Help them to reach their goal of “…100 books to every child by the age of five.”
15h00-16h00 – Diane Awerbuck (Panel leader) Jolyn Phillips, Sandra Hill, Joanne Hichens.
Short and sweet: Short story writing is experiencing a rejuvenation. Diane Awerbuck interviews Jolyn Phillips, Joanne Hichens and Sandra Hill about the art of keeping it short.
17h00-18h00 – Nancy Richards (Panel Leader), Andrew Brown, John Fredericks , Don Pinnock. “Skollies”: Nancy Richards explores the differing approaches of Andrew Brown’ John Fredericks and Don Pinnock to the subject of crime, gangs and prisons in Cape Town.
Saturday 25 March, 19h00-20h00 – Melanie Verwoerd (Panel Leader), Helen Zille. Not without a fight: Helen Zille will be quizzed by Melanie Verwoerd about her autobiography.(Limited seating please book)
Wordsworth Books (Longbeach) will sell the books at Fish Hoek before and after the talks.
