Back by popular demand at the Labia Theatre is the intimate drama, The Way, starring Martin Sheen, and the inspiringly beautiful travelogue, Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago. Both films, set on the famous Camino de Santiago in Spain, which draws people from all over the world on an epic pilgrimage every year, will be rescreened in May in aid of StreetSmart SA.
Walking the Camino
Hundreds of thousands (over 200,000 in 2014) of Christian pilgrims and many others set out each year from their front doorsteps or from popular starting points across Europe, to make their way to Santiago de Compostela. Most travel by foot, some by bicycle, and a few travel as some of their medieval counterparts did, on horseback or by donkey.
In addition to those undertaking a religious pilgrimage, many are hikers who walk the route for other reasons: travel, sport, or simply the challenge of weeks of walking in a foreign land. Also, many consider the experience a spiritual adventure to remove themselves from the bustle of modern life. It serves as a retreat for many modern “pilgrims”.
Streetsmart
StreetSmart SA is an organisation dedicated towards helping street children rebuild their lives through public donations with the support of a network of restaurants throughout the Western Cape and Gauteng. Funds are primarily raised by participating restaurants adding a voluntary R5 donation to each table’s bill. Every cent raised in this way goes towards social and educational upliftment projects for street children. The organisation was set up by a group of concerned Capetonians under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and comprises resourceful board members representing business and the hospitality and tourism industries. Similar StreetSmart organisations also run independently throughout the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Vancouver and the Netherlands.
