Mick Raubenheimer’s ROUND CORNERS mini interviews situate given artists outside their medium whilst peeking into their various worlds. He sat down with talented multi-instrumentalist and leader of electro outfit MACHINE, Maria Mombelli, to chat about music and inspiration.

When did you first identify as a creative artist?

I’ve been composing since the age of 13 but I think I probably started identifying as a creative artist when I started my last band called Maria Mombelli & The BelliButtons. My music has evolved since then and I have recently started a new band called MACHINE.

Outside of your medium, what branch of art most stimulates you?

Definitely cooking. I can spend hours in the kitchen preparing gourmet dishes that look and taste incredible.

Which artist/s in said discipline have significantly inspired you, and why?

My dad (Carlo Mombelli) is definitely one of my biggest inspirations. He has mentored me and has helped me grow into the musician that I am today. Son Lux is also a very big inspiration for me. I am in love with the melodies that they use. Their music is unique.

What, to you, is art’s most important function?

In my opinion and experience, art is there to help you escape the “real world” amongst other things. When I listen to music or when I play music, it nearly sends me into a meditative trance where I don’t have to think about anything else.

Local creatives (in any medium) that currently excite you?

I love LUMA. They are a local band led by Jenny Dison which I have been fortunate to play with. They actually recently played at an event that I host every last Friday of the month called SYNTHESIS.

What specific work – be it in literature, music, or visual art – do
you return to again and again, and why?

There are two albums from Son Lux which I have probably listened to more than 20 times. The albums are called Bones and Lanterns. Those two albums actually inspired me to start adding electronics into my music. Both albums just blow my mind. They are works of art.

Any current project you’re unveiling/wrapping up?

I am busy recording my first album called Dream Town which I will be unveiling very soon.
