The Marimba Jam Festival at GrandWest on Women’s Day, 9 August 2019, will take place at Sun Exhibits.
The festival will promote female-empowerment and nation-building by bringing together youth from different socio-economic backgrounds. The event is the annual fundraiser for the NPO Marimba Jam Cares.
The festival will take place throughout the day, with various panel discussions, educational talks and marimba workshops on offer, as well as the special evening concert with literally hundreds of performers. There will also be a flea-market, food stalls, a bar area (for over 18s) and a kids’ zone.
Marimba Jam Festival Activities Tent
A highlight will be the fantastic Activities Tent that will host drumming, boom-whacker, gumboot dancing and African dancing workshops. These will cost R25 extra per slot, and space is limited. You can purchase tickets to these slots when buying your festival tickets online.
The evening concert will begin at 6.30pm with the mass-item involving 450 Marimba Jam students and an accompanying choir. This concert will include performances from our outreach bands, matric bands as well as various other South African acts.
“This is a wonderful celebration of all things marimba,” says Elouise Matthys, the PR and Promotions Manager at GrandWest. “Anyone who is interested in playing marimba or in the wonderful work the Marimba Jam NGO does should not miss this opportunity.”
About Marimba Jam
Marimba Jam originally sprung from an initiative that aimed to break the socio-economic barriers that divide the South African youth, through African marimba playing.
This initiative aimed to give learners a means of expression through rhythm and music.
It aimed to promote cultural and social harmony.
Now, Marimba Jam is a company that strives to continue to enrich students with the energy and enjoyment of marimba music.
Currently teaching over 350 school learners in Cape Town as well as having a professional Marimba Jam Performing Band, Marimba Jam has become a thriving and dynamic organisation.
