A mini jazz festival
Elsies River and Matroosfontein in particular is well-known for its rich cultural heritage over the past 60 years. The area has produced brilliant musicians and sportsmen – most notably football players who made their name at Elsbury Park Football Grounds in Matroosfontein.
This event encapsulates a mini jazz festival and the elements of the old backyard house parties referred to as huisjolle, which were enjoyed during the time when it was popular to host a dance party in the local communities. People from all areas flocked to Matroosfontein to clap up the music of legendary DJs and artists who were established in this region.
The late iconic Robbie Jansen was a resident of Matroosfontein, whilst contemporary artists like pianist Camillo Lombard, saxophonist, Donvino Prins and The Voice national winner, Craig Lucas, all hail from the region which forms part of Elsies River. For Prins, it will be a special homecoming, as he was a learner at Elsbury Primary.
Another treat will be the performance of young sax sensation August West. West is also from Matroosfontein and was inspired by Donvino. The two of them will be doing a tribute to Robbie Jansen.
The Rockets, also had its founding roots in Matroosfontein, while jazz singer Vernon Castle is from Bishop Lavis and laid the foundations for his long career in Elsies.
Some famous DJs of yesteryear from the area, such as Dr John, Isibane and DJ Mac, have been invited to attend.
This community empowerment initiative works in conjunction with the Band Aid charity arm.
