McCoy Mrubata sax

The Cape Town Music Academy, CTMA, is presenting saxophonist McCoy Mrubata’s Homecoming Concerts to mark a milestone birthday celebration and launch of his new album Lullaby for Khayoyo. The showcase will be on Saturday 1 June, 2024, from 8pm  at the Star Theatre, Homecoming Centre in District Six.

Recorded live by FMR

This concert will be recorded live by Fine Music Radio (FMR 101.3 FM) for a later broadcast. In celebrating his birthday Mrubata will perform two other concerts on Sunday, 2 June at Guga S’thebe in Langa from 4pm and on Thursday, 6 June at Café Roux in Noordhoek at 6pm.

He will be joined on stage by his American friend Gary Wittner on guitar and two of Cape Town’s finest musicians – Sibusiso Matsimela on bass and drummer Tefo Mahola.

Mrubata made his California debut in April when he and Garry Wittner were joined by bass player Noah Garabedian and drummer Deszon Claiborne in a performance at the San Francisco Jazz Festival in the USA. Mrubata’s leading performance was part of a Southern African Arts Alliance program celebrating the 30th anniversary of Freedom Day, South Africa’s first democratic elections. They continued touring different cities performing at jazz clubs, theatres and conducting workshops and master classes in between the gigs up until the 9 May.

‘Lullaby for Khayoyo’

Heading back to his hometown in June, Mrubata says he is very excited that he will be playing new music from his latest album Lullaby for Khayoyo.

“Capetonians are going to love the new songs and they can expect great music comprised of groovy sounds, energetic African rhythms, and heartwarming ballads especially the title track, Lullaby for Khayoyo,” he says.

“It means a lot to me to perform in Cape Town, my hometown and celebrating my 65th birthday. This is where I first desire to play music was planted. I had lots of musical influences and coming back to share my music with Capetonians is a blessing that is beyond growth in age but a musical enrichment,” explains Mrubata.
