“We are thrilled to announce this second part of our 2018 Bioscope World Arts Cinema Season at The Fugard Theatre,” says Greg Karvellas, Resident Director and Curator of the Cinema Season. “Along with our customary offering of stunning ballet, theatre and opera production offerings, we have added some exciting new Comédie-Française productions which are performed in French with English subtitles. We look forward to welcoming our regular as well as new patrons to our screenings.”

Ballet lovers are spoilt for choice including classics such as romantic masterpiece La Sylphide and Don Quixote as well as much loved newer ones such as Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling. Opera aficionados won’t want to miss the Royal Opera House’s five-star production of The Queen of Spades, Tchaikovsky’s intense opera of obsession and the supernatural, which is conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera.

As always the programme is a theatre-goer’s treat with a selection that includes the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Romeo and Juliet, which The Guardian UK described as a “swift, lively production” and Whatsonstage called a “youthful and energetic take on Shakespeare’s tragedy”.

There’s also National Theatre Live’s Hamlet, starring Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, their The Madness of King George III by Alan Bennett and Julie, a new version of August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie directed by Carrie Cracknell (NT Live: The Deep Blue Sea). Comédie Française’s Cyrano de Bergerac ,which won six Molière awards, France’s official theatre awards, will be screened on 16 December.

Catch festive season favourite The Nutcracker, presented by the Royal Ballet on 23 December, while February 2019 brings a French flavour with a series of wonderful comedies from Comédie-Française, one of France’s most respected theatres and home to Molière’s historic theatre troupe.
