The V&A Waterfront has long been a one-stop shop for foodies, and with their NeighbourFood Winter campaign on the go, snapping up seasonal specials makes the precinct well-worth a visit. The phenomenal selection of cuisine on offer mostly comes with knockout Waterfront views, offset by the constant buzz of foot traffic in search of various items of interest.

While shopping remains a major lure, appetites rule amidst this Cape hotspot’s vast food ecosystem. And now for the second year in a row, NeighbourFood offerings up the game as a selection of restaurants make available specials to suit every occasion.

Visitors can choose from a wide range of dishes at venues such as Quay Four, Sevruga, Tiger’s Milk, La Parada, Crumbs & Cream, Cause & Effect, Gibson’s, The Raj, Col’cacchio, Primi, and more. To view the full list, see here.

What’s not to love!

I opted to experience Sevruga’s two-course (Starter and Main at R280) and three-course (Main and Dessert at R320) winter highlights. Perfectly located right next to the ocean, this top-class eatery features a great seafood and grill menu, underpinned by Asian fusion nuances. Their NeighbourFood selection includes Starters such as a 4-piece Sushi Prawn Fashion Sandwich, Chicken Livers, or Green Salad with Avo and Parmesan. Mains include Rump Steak, Crispy Calamari, an 8-piece Sushi Snow Dragon Roll, and a vegetarian 7 Spice Tofu Steak.

Sevruga’s plating is perfectly curated, with just the right measure of artful presentation and colourful appeal. Every Starter and Main sampled was sensational – mouthwatering, with subtle aftertastes. Two tantalising Desserts on their specials menu are Cheesecake with Candied Citrus, Lemon Curd, Poppy seeds and Citrus Brûlée; and a truly magnificent Tonka Bean Infused Crème Brûlée which I must add is uniquely light and creamy, and enhanced with phenomenal, swoon-inducing flavour.

Sevruga’s Eastern-Cape born Chef, Patrick Ndyebo, comments that his choice of specials are those that are generally the most popular. “I realised that these are what customers like the most, and we sell a lot.” The most desired item on the winter specials menu he says is the 7 Spice Tofu Steak: “Most people like vegetarian, and it’s delicious. It is served on tender stem broccoli, charred red and yellow peppers, baby carrots, courgettes, blackened pearl onions, charred artichoke hearts, tomato confit, Kalamata olives and gremolata.” What’s not to love!

Holistic food initiative

Tinyiko Mageza, Executive Head of Marketing, V&A Waterfront, explains that Neighbourfood, the V&As holistic food initiative, aims to develop a sustainable, locally-based, authentic and culturally diverse food ecosystem that supports healthy food lifestyles and livelihoods.

“Neighbourfood is our way of saying ‘come and let us break bread together’. Communal eating offers a sense of belonging, increases social bonding and feelings of wellbeing. It also sparks joy, enhances our sense of contentedness and embeds us within a community. The platform also serves as a table for important food conversations and this is reflected in themes and activations we have planned.”

‘Spoilt for choice’ is an understatement when it comes to the eatery selection at the V&A, as the locale keeps hosting a never-ending stream of interesting new restaurants designed to delight a broad variety of palettes. So, get out and explore!
