RATA Summer Theatre Season 2021 - 2022The success of the inaugural RATA Summer Theatre Season of 2020 – 2021 at the Royal Arts Theatre Amphitheatre in Riebeek Kasteel has led to a second season.

More than a dozen performing artists were on stage and some 1000 audience members experienced live theatre during the first season. This time around, the season will run from  September 2021 and end on 7 May 2022.

The line-up includes:

16 October 2021: Guy Buttery and Nibs van der Spuy album (pictured above) launch – Live in Lisbon.

6 November 2021: Covid Moons:  A once-off screening of the filmed RATA / National Arts Festival production of the play which opened our the Summer Theatre Season, written and directed by Clare Stopford, starring Celeste Loots and Thulani Nzonzo.

3 and 4 December 2021: Double bill of children’s theatre by the Jungle Theatre Company.

17 and 18 December 2021: Godfrey’s Magic Piano: Godfrey Johnson on vocals and keyboards.

7 and 8 January 2022: Gertrude Stein and a Companion: The award-winning production about Gertrude Stein and Alice B Toklas starring Lynita Crofford and Shirley Johnston, directed by Christopher Weare.

4 and 5 February 2022: Auntie Wi’oekal / Dude! Wa’s my Bakkie? Double bill of the acclaimed National Arts Festival productions starring Faith Kinniar and Jeremeo Le Cordeur.

8 and 9 April: Ferine and Ferase: The multi–award winning director and performing artist duo Sylvaine Strike and Andrew Buckland’s newest work.

6 and 7 May 2022: Swan Song: Buhle Ngaba’s lauded one-woman show.

The Stage Manager, Lighting Operator, Sound Operator, AV Operator, Props Master and Stage Crew who run RATA shows are a part of a team of eight members of the community who were selected from many applicants to undergo an intensive theatre technicians’ training programme in August 2020 under the leadership of Namhla Kalipa-Tunyiswa.  A year ago, most of them had never been in a theatre or seen a live production.  Today, they are all theatre professionals.
