Shane Cooper and his new band Mabuta launch their much anticipated debut album Welcome To This World. In association with Concerts SA, Mabuta will present their music live in Cape Town this February.
Recorded in 2017 on funds raised via crowdfunding, the band presents a unique body of work combining various influences from jazz to world music, and electronic music.
The live ensemble is led by SAMA award-winning bassist and composer Shane Cooper of Cape Town, and features some of South Africa’s freshest musicians: Bokani Dyer (keys), Sisonke Xonti (tenor sax), Robin Fassie-Kock (trumpet), Marlon Witbooi (drums), and special guest Reza Khota (guitar). With potent guest appearances by talented saxophonists Shabaka Hutchings and Buddy Wells, Welcome To This World is a powerful album by the jazz quintet, due for release in February 2018.
Shane Cooper says: “This album has been a big project for me, in fact it’s probably the hardest I’ve worked on any recording project yet. Since tracking the core band in Johannesburg in March 2017, so much has happened. I pulled in guest artists from all over the world, ones on tour, and ones passing through town.”
“I’m fortunate that the album now includes so many of my favourite artists as guests, people like Shabaka Hutchings, Reza Khota, Buddy Wells and more. I’m very happy to be at this point, just a few weeks from launching the album and presenting it live”, says Shane.
The album artwork is stunning and is a licensed piece by the Toronto-based artist Rajni Perera, who investigates diasporic dream worlds. Shane says: “I’ve been wanting to work with her for over three years now. I spent months looking for the right art for the album, and when I found this piece I knew it was the one!”
