Everybody knows at least one or two Simon & Garfunkel songs – does The Sound of Silence ring any bells? Now you can hear them live at the Theatre on the Bay. Here’s to You is a celebration of Simon & Garfunkel songs presented by a slick South African cast of eight who all play musical instruments. Under the musical directorship of Wessel Odendaal, the cast is led by Josh Ansley (The Voice SA 2017 runner-up) on guitar with Ashleigh Butcher on banjo/guitar/ukelele, Daniel Geddes on keyboards, Hanna So on piano/violin/cello, Justin Swartz on guitar/vocals/percussion, Phindile Dube on percussion and Sanli Jooste on cello.
Here’s to You features thrillingly fresh, yet faithful re-interpretations of the music of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, including favourites such as The Sound of Silence, Scarborough Fair, Cecilia and Bridge over Troubled Water.
Simon & Garfunkel partnership
Simon & Garfunkel formed their formidable folk-rock partnership in the 1960s, after becoming friends in elementary school in New York. Their best-selling albums Bridge over Troubled Water and Sounds of Silence propelled them into the stratosphere of star musicians, and their legacy includes memorable compositions such as I am a Rock, Homeward Bound, Mrs Robinson, America and The Boxer.
Sadly, artistic and personal differences saw them split up by 1970. They did, however, have several reunions including the classic Concert in Central Park, recorded live in 1981. As recently as 2009 they were still holding reunion gigs, including tours to Asia and Australia. However, it 2018 it appeared they were officially “retiring” from touring.
Paul Simon went on to a successful solo career, with his global hit album Graceland notably featuring a number of South African musicians including Ladismith Black Mambazo, Ray Phiri and Bakithi Kumalo.
