Concerts Connect is proud to present Songs of Love in an online concert on 27 September 2020. Janel Speelman (soprano, pictured left) and Makudu Senaoana (tenor) will join forces with pianist Albie van Schalkwyk to present an attractive programme of love songs, arias and lieder.
The programme will include works by Menotti, Beethoven, Quilter, Wolf and a selection of songs from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. The stream will start at 3.30pm with an introduction to the artists and partner organisations. The stream will be available for 72 hours from the start of the concert.
About the artists
After attaining her Bachelor’s degree at UCT under the direction of Prof. Virginia Davids, Janel Speelman completed a Masters of Music at the University of Michigan in the USA. Ms Speelman was invited to sing at the School of Music Theatre and Dance annual prestigious performance at the Kennedy Centre as part of a select group representing the school. During her studies she was awarded the Andrea Person Vocal Award and the George Shirley Scholarship.
Makudu Senaoana also completed his undergraduate studies at UCT, under the direction of Prof. Kamal Khan and Hannah van Niekerk. He was the first prize winner of the 2016 Voices of South Africa International Opera Competition. He has been described as a “beautiful singer and musician”.
Albie van Schalkwyk has established himself as one of the leading chamber musicians and vocal accompanists in South Africa over the past 30 years. He has been a regular panel member of several South African competitions, including the Chamber Music Competition in Stellenbosch, the UNISA National Piano Competition and the SAMRO National Singing Competition.
Concerts Connect has partnered with the Cape Town Concert Series, kayTee Soirées, Overstrand Arts/Kunste, and the PE Music Society in presenting this concert.
