Repeating itself over and over is the 1993 romantic holiday comedy, Groundhog Day, which releases on 10 January – and, with a R50 ticket price, you can afford to watch it over again! A narcissistic and self-centred weatherman finds himself in a time loop on Groundhog Day. Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott, the film is directed by Harold Ramis and has a running time of 1hr 41mins.

Inspired by a true story, the 2006 biographical drama, The Pursuit of Happyness fills the big screen from 17 January. The film stars award-winning actor Will Smith as a struggling salesman who is given custody of his son (played by Smith’s son, Jaden), just as he is poised to begin a life-changing professional career. The film is directed by Gabriele Muccino and also stars Thandiwe Newton and Brian Howe.

No Country for Old Men releases at select Ster-Kinekor cinemas the following week, from 24 January. This 2007 crime thriller follows the violence and mayhem that ensue after a hunter stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong and over two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande. Directed and written by the award-winning Coen brothers, Ethan and Joel, the film features an all-star cast including Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson, Josh Brolin and Kelly Macdonald.

The last Throwback Cinema title for January is the 1998 sci-fi comedy, The Truman Show, which releases on 31 January. An insurance salesman, Truman Burbank (played by Jim Carrey), begins to suspect that his whole life is actually part of a huge TV set on some sort of reality TV show. Ed Harris is the executive producer Christof, who orchestrates “The Truman Show,” a live broadcast of Truman’s every move, every day, captured by hidden cameras. As Truman gradually discovers the truth, however, he must decide whether or not to act on it. Directed by Peter Weir, the film also stars Natascha McElhone, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich and Holland Taylor.

When February arrives, we can all breathe a little better, but Throwback Cinema still promises some top-class classic titles at the affordable price of R50. Releasing on 7 February, 10 Things I Hate About You welcomes the second month of 2025. A high-school boy, Cameron, cannot date Bianca until her anti-social older sister, Kat, has a boyfriend. So Cameron pays a mysterious boy, Patrick, to charm Kat. This 1999 coming-of-age romantic comedy, adapted from William Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew, stars the late Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik.
