The Tony Award-winning musical and hit Broadway show A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder comes to the Cape this winter.
Presented by The Masque and Milnerton Players, this brilliantly funny, acclaimed musical comedy is about ambition, inheritance, and just how far one man is willing to go to get what he believes he deserves.
It will be performed at The Masque in Muizenberg from 22 May to 6 June 2026 followed by a run at Milnerton Playhouse from 19 June to 5 July 2026.
Directed by CATA-winner Kyla Thorburn, musical direction is by Barend Van Der Westhuizen, who also performs in the show, and is himself a recipient of a number of CATAs.
Book and lyrics are by Robert L. Freedman, with music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is based on a novel by Roy Horniman. The show has been a critical success, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 2014, and seven Drama Desk Awards.
It’s based on the 1907 fictional novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal by Roy Horniman. In this novel, readers follow the journey of Israel Rank, an ambitious man whose desire to climb the social ladder comedically turns him into a serial killer.
The thatrical version is about the charming but penniless Monty Navarro, who discovers he is eighth in line to inherit the earldom of the wealthy D’Ysquith famil. He sets out to improve his prospects – by eliminating the competition. One by one. With style.
Featuring a gloriously witty book, and a deliciously clever score, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is a fast-paced romp full of elegant mayhem, dark humour, and delightful surprises. A murderously good time awaits.
