The Major Voices male acapella group have been using their voices to transform their community for the last 13 years. Based in the township of Khayelitsha, Cape Town, these gangsters-turned-gentlemen are harnessing the power of music to change lives.
To showcase their success they will be presenting a documentary premiere on 15 November, 2025, at 6pm at Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha. Access more information at AMANENE.INFO.
Despite what they refer to as “a rough past entangled in gang life and drugs”, they are now known in their community as Amanene — the gentlemen — singing to inspire hope and uplift the next generation.
Amanene Beyond Voices
Their wonderful story has recently been captured in a feature length documentary titled Amanene Beyond Voices, directed and produced by our long-time friend and collaborator Maggie Mercier from Canada, who has spent unimaginable amount of time hanging out with the ensemble in Khayelitsha over the last 8 years.
This unique and unusual friendship and collaboration has brought the group’s story to the screen in a way that is both deeply personal and universal. The film is an immersion into their music but also goes beyond voices to reveal in their daily lives and struggles, showing how music became their weapon of change from gangsters to gentlemen, and a bridge towards a brighter future full of dreams.
Amanene Beyond Voices celebrates resilience, brotherhood and the power of music to change lives. Entry to the screening is free.
Major Voices aim to inspire. They say: “We believe we have an amazing story, and shining a light on us can help others!”
