The Cape Amateur Theatre Awards 2018 winners have been announced. SHEILA CHISHOLM was there.
The Masque Theatre’s red carpet and glittering black and gold decorated foyer welcomed elegant guests to CATA 2018. These annual awards are a highlight on amateur thespians calendars. They pay tribute to players who excelled technically or artistically in a play or musical in 2018.
The Cape Amateur Theatre Awards panel is led by Lynn Moss. This particular occasion also celebrated the 60th anniversary since the late Bertie Stern’s generosity and vision opened the doors of this charming little theatre.
Fine Music Radio’s station manager Mark Jennings, in his role as MC, pointed out how important the Cape Amateur Theatre Awards are towards encouraging people to become involved in theatre, either as actors or back stage crew.
He paid special tribute to CATA’s guest of honour Cecilia Musikanth, who in one capacity or another has devoted 53 years promoting theatre.
Hottentots Holland Dramatic Society shared top awards with Constantia Players. Each society received six awards.
In The Diary of Anne Frank Skye Bullen took home three awards 1) Best Junior Performance in a Play 2) Most Promising Newcomer in a Play 3) Best Lead Actress in a Play. Best Support Actress in a Play went to Carly Beavon; Rory Currin received the Artistic Contribution award; Wicus Louw won Technical Excellence; Best Support Actress in a Play went to Carly Beavon.
For The Producers, Constantia Players won Best costumes – Tamsyn Wilson and Nicky Enticott; Most Promising Newcomer in a Musical went to Matthew Kingwill; Ariella Barnett won Best Support Actress in a Musical; Rob Coutts won Best Support Actor in a Musical; David Wilke won Best Lead Actor in a Musical; Neil Leachman took home Best Director in a Musical.
G&S received four awards for Snoopy. Best Junior Performance in a Musical went to Bryony Bosman; Best Lead Actress in a Musical went to Martine Kawalsky; Best Musical Director went to Kathy Lin: Snoopy won Best Musical.
Milnerton Players received three awards. Best Director in a Play went to Judith Herbig for Miracle on South Division Street which also won Best Play. Best Support Actor in a Play was awarded to Trevor Joubert in The Christmas Spirit.
Claremont Dramatic Society won two awards. Best Set went to Richard Higgs for Playing with Fire. Cameo Performance went to Kerith Coulson in Comedy of Errors. Best Lead Actor in a Play went to Robert Shenton in Dial M for Murder, presented by Fish Hoek Dramatic Society.
The coveted CODS Cup for Outstanding achievement in service to amateur theatre went to Ruth Allsopp.
Over and above the main awards Certificates of Merit went to Rosemary Wilke for Programme concept of Snoopy, Erin Gemmell for his role of Woodstock. Waldo Buckle’s Painted Emblems scene in Ruddigore. For My Eyes Are Fully Open Barend van der Westhuizen, Stephan le Roux and Kerryn Warren were given Certificates of Merit (G&S):
Certificates of Merit went to Noah de Villiers, Ariella Barnett, Matthew Kingwill – Springtime for Hitler, and Rob Coutts, David Wilke, Mark Wilkes – Guten tag Hop Klop. David Wilke & Chorus – I Wanna Be a Producer; Cast of The Producers – Bialystock & Bloom (Constantiaberg Theatre Players).
Cast of Saturday Night at the Movies – Opening & Closing Numbers (Hottentots Holland Dramatic Society).
A Certificate of Merit went to Mandy Cardin’s tap dance in Nunsense (Milnerton Players).
After the formal award ceremony, in prescribed fashion, bubbly, light snacks and general jollifications continued for some time.
