Eminent South African cellist Peter Martens will perform on Sunday 7 May at 3pm at Christ Church Constantia. Martens is performing numbers 1 and 6 of Johann Sebastian Bach’s six unaccompanied Cello Sonatas.
Composed during the years 1717-1723, these sonatas are recognized among the most popular works for cello, and the most frequently played.
Op 17 and Op 69
The programme also includes two of Beethoven’s favoured Piano and Cello Sonatas… Op 17 and Op 69. For these, at the piano playing alongside Martens, will be Portuguese master pianist Luis Magalhães.
‘Polished, refined technique’
Of Martens’s recent CD of Bach’s Cello Suits, Robin Stowell (the Strad, 2013) said, “Peter Martens’s interpretations are thoughtfully prepared and generally commendably executed, balancing modern performance practices with the simple clarity of period style….” The American Record Guide has described Magalhaes as “possessing a wonderfully full sound.” Allmusic.com refers to his “polished, refined technique.”
Both artistes have played extensively in Europe, and are very active in South Africa, especially in Stellenbosch and Cape Town music circles.
Martens is currently Director of The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival and Artistic Administrator of the Department of Music at Stellenbosch University. Magalhaes is an Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University Music Department.
To hear these two skilled musicians early booking is advised.
