Gumtree South Africa is looking to kickstart the careers of Cape Town’s aspiring DJs, music producers and sound technicians in partnership with The Scratch Lab, a DJ training facility founded by Cape Town hip hop legends Ready D, DJ Azuhl and E-20.
The three DJs, collectively known as the Beat Bangaz, will host a free one-day workshop in Woodstock on 14 October, to equip young people with the knowledge they need to turn their passion for music into a professional career.
Entry to the workshop is entirely sponsored and 35 spots are up for grabs. The course will cover the basics of DJing and music production, as well as advice on gear set-up and maintenance and a segment on how to market your skills and build a personal brand.

To secure a place, hopeful participants simply need to post their music or sound career goals to Gumtree South Africa’s Facebook page with the hashtag #GumtreeBusinessOfSound. Successful applicants will be notified on Monday 9 October 2017.
The Scratch Lab regularly hosts DJ training workshops in communities across Cape Town. This time around Deon Daniels AKA DJ Ready D looks forward to offering something with a professional slant.
“There’s no shortage of talent and passion in our local scene. Combine that with some smart business thinking and our young people have what it takes to achieve greatness in the industry. Each of us in the Beat Bangaz has spent the last 30 years in music and entertainment, and we’re eager to share the lessons we’ve learnt with the next generation.”
Claire Cobbledick, Head of Core Business at Gumtree South Africa, says the idea for the workshop was inspired by the many people who’ve built successful careers in the sound and music industry through Gumtree.
“Sound equipment is one of our most highly traded categories. Over the years, we’ve found several inspiring stories of people running full time businesses on our platform selling their DJ services, hiring out equipment for events, or becoming experts in trading and repairing sound gear.”
