After packing out theatres in Europe, Cape Town born writer and director William Makin is bringing his electrifying original boxing drama Gloves Off home for the first time – with a limited season at The Homecoming Centre this March 2026. Cape Town audiences will be the first in South Africa to experience the homegrown hit.

Following a sold-out debut in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, the high energy production arrives in Cape Town from 17 to 21 March 2026, promising the kind of edge of your seat theatre experience that feels closer to fight night than a night out at the theatre.
Energetic, unforgettable
Described by audiences abroad as electrifying, energetic and unforgettable, Gloves Off throws viewers straight into the world of two childhood best friends turned bitter rivals. Billy “The Kid” Buccaneer and Joe “The Prince” Bronco once trained side by side. Now they are preparing to face each other for the local boxing championship title – The SANABO Trials – in the biggest fight of their lives.

But this is more than a boxing story.
It is a story about pride, loyalty, fractured friendship and the cost of obsession. As both fighters push themselves to their limits, tensions rise inside and outside the ring. Heated press conferences, relentless training sessions and the glare of the spotlight build toward one explosive showdown where everything is on the line.
Personal journeys
Blending the grit and glamour of professional boxing with deeply human drama, Gloves Off captures the raw emotion and fierce competitiveness of top flight competition, while keeping audiences fully invested in the personal journeys of the two men at its centre.
William Makin says: “This play looks both fighters in the eye and asks what happens when the person who knows you best becomes the one you must defeat. Bringing the production home to Cape Town with an all South African cast and creative team makes this season incredibly meaningful.”
With immersive staging, powerful performances and visceral fight choreography, Gloves Off delivers a theatrical knockout that will have audiences cheering long after the final bell.
