Cape Town future jazz and dance outfit Pravda are all set to perform new original material with the support of the Hot Club of Cape Town and DJ Django at Brewers’ Co-op, Woodstock, in preparation for the launch of their second groove-leaning EP Drink Water.
Expect a unique, live electronic take on vintage swing jazz, plus locally brewed craft beer. Dancing shoes are recommended for this gig! Modern Folk EPs will also be on sale (R50).
Who are Pravda?
This ensemble is a live electronic band formed in 2006. They infuse their trademark ‘future jazz’ into original songs and vintage swing-era classics using live instrumentation and cutting edge music technology. Their influences include the likes of Jamiroquai, Goldfish, Mi Casa, Gotan Project, Goodluck and Caravan Palace.
Their take: “It’s fresh. Sophisticated DJ equipment allows the controller to adapt to changes in the accompanying live performance with tools like timeshifting, tempo tapping and sub-routing. Songs merge, providing continuity for dancing. On-the-fly looping ensures that no two performances can ever be the same. The results break the generic dance music mold, breathing and pulsing around the live performance while marrying all the benefits of spontaneity with the type of energy we expect from dance music.”
Pravda has performed Rocking the Daisies, J&B Met, Neighbourgoods Market, Truth Coffee, Youngblood Art Gallery and Val de Vie Estate. They’re versatile – ranging from balls-to-the-wall live energy, to light background cocktail jazz. Basically an original, progressive take on good-time electronic music guaranteed to leave you with a smile.
So what’s The Hot Club?
The Hot Club sound emerged from Europe in the 1930s, combining swing jazz with the rippling melodies of Parisian dance-halls, and the distinctive gypsy harmonies of the Eastern Mediterranean. The Hot Club of Cape Town adds a hint of Cape jazz into the mix, to produce a sound that is steeped in tradition, yet contemporary and local at the same time. It’s fun, lively, romantic and, above all, swinging music for all ages and all venues.
The Hot Club of Cape Town play a variety of instrumental jazz classics hearkening back to the smoky nightclubs of pre-war Paris, when wild string players roamed the earth and unchained melodies could be found lurking around every corner.
