Pianist Daniel Ciobanu, the winner of the First Prize and Special Prize for best “Classical Sonata” at the last UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria, will open the Cape Town Concert Series recital series on Saturday, February 25, at The Baxter Concert Hall at 20:00.
Ciobanu will play a programme of works by Silvestri, Chopin (including the Polonaise Brillante), Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky also Enescu, Medtner and Prokofiev
The young Rumanian pianist is considered to be one of the most exciting pianists on the international concert stage today.
Five years ago he was invited to perform alongside Lang Lang in a concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, appearing in a piano orchestra of 100 pianos. Lang Lang also chose him to perform solo in front of the audience of 3000.
Among the prizes he has won are 2nd prize at the International Competition “Adilia Alieva” in France, 3rd prize in the International Competition “Piano Campus” from Paris and the Grand Prix in the Morocco Philharmonique International Competition. In 2014, he was awarded a Yamaha Music Foundation Europe Scholarship . He has received master classes from many international pianists such as Pascal Rogé, and performed with orchestra across Europe and also in Morocco and China.
