Angels on Horseback: Reloaded has opened at the KBT, for a two-week run before galloping off to the KKNK. Director Fiona du Plooy is my friend, which is how come I was there on opening night, as opposed to being there to write a review, but I had such a great time I couldn’t help myself.
From the moment the show started I forgot that even I brought the general age in the room down by 25%, I forgot the Facebook thread war I had had in the afternoon, I forgot the insane and unnatural heat, and I produced my own water for cooling. Because this show is an hour and a bit of raunchy, riotous, reeling, rocking and ridiculous. And you can’t help but love every second.
Original songs are peppered with local references, there is a smattering of Afrikaans, a tribute to Dolly, some rude re-workings (my absolute favourite being the These Boots are Made for Walking re-visit), lots of funky dance moves, some sad and beautiful moments and genius performances by Alicia McCormick and Genna Galloway (who has just picked up a Fleur du Cap award for her role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch). The music is magic, the singing sublime and it is hilarious as all hell. The energy and synergy of Genna and Alicia is so delicious that they are lovable and addictive from the first moment.
Country gets a makeover here, and metrosexuals, Annie the Texan vibrator dealer, Johannes the real guy, independent women and cheating lovers all make an appearance.
I dragged a reluctant husband to be my plus one and on the way home he asked if we could go again. It’s that good.
