Pianist and composer Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane released his second album, Rotha – A Tribute to Mama, in August and is now ready to present it on a launch tour. His band, The Mash Trio features Riley Giandhari on drums and Dalisu Ndlazi on bass. Capetonians can hear them from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 November, 2017.
Rotha is a tribute to Mashiloane’s cherished figures and memories, most importantly a tribute to his mother Rotha who passed away in 2016 while he was in the studio.
Sharing Coltrane’s harmonic movements
Rotha is an acoustic traditional jazz album that radiates South African heritage sounds and universal jazz influences. Mashiloane describes it as sharing Coltrane’s harmonic movements with African influences within the melody, with references to South African tribal and spiritual sounds.
Mashiloane is a prolific artist whose academic credentials speak volumes about the kind of passion he has for music. He received his Masters degree in Jazz Performance, graduating Cum Laude from the University of KwaZulu Natal.

‘Amanz’ Olwandle’
His debut album Amanz’ Olwandle (2016) was the first glimpse of a promising musical journey. Amanz’ Olwandle was awarded two awards for Best Jazz Album at the Mzantsi Jazz Awards.
His compositions aim to blur the line between jazz and other genres. His performances are inspired by funk, hip hop, gospel and traditional music from South Africa, attracting music fans of all genres as well as straight ahead jazz aficionados. He has also built a career as a musical director, and explored the repertoire of composers like Bheki Mseleku, Joey Calderazzo, McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Themba Mkhize, Andile Yenana, Zim Ngqawana, Moses Molelekwa and Bud Powell.
Mashiloane lectures at the University of KwaZulu Natal and Durban Music School. His focus is to teach and organise gigs with his students focusing on South African composers. He is also busy with a PhD on South African music.
