The 16th annual Suidoosterfees 2019 will take place at the Artscape Theatre Centre from 24 to 30 April and will end at the Cape Town City Hall on 1 May, with a full programme of festivities.
Some highlights which will take place in the Artscape Opera House include the Brimstone Pops with the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, MI(SA) with Amanda Strydom and the Cape Town Opera Choir, Die Klanke van Lagunya with Camillo Lombard and Fancy Galada, Nataniël with his brand new production, Anthem, as well as the Soweto String Quartet, Anton Goosen en vriende with Sonja Heroldt, Lynnelle Kenned and Early B (pictured right).
Drama productions such as Marthinus Basson’s Die Gangsters, Christo Davids’ Harry and Jackie: Tussen die bokse and Reza de Wet’s prescribed work for matriculants, Mis will take place in the kykNET theatre. There are also unique music productions such as Ella Fitzgerald: A Century in Song featuring Anna Davel and Sima Mashazi, My Miriam Makeba Story, and classic favorites such as The Merry Widow and La Serva Padrona.
The Velvet Room will be filled with intimate productions such as the Coffee Snobs in Donkernagpantoen, Neels van Jaarsveld in Eish-stekend, Trio de musique: It takes three 2 tango, a late night cabaret with Godfrey Johnson in Shadows of Brel and the comedy, Face for Radio with Dalin Oliver.
Suidooster Fees 2019 rising stars and talent search
The NATi Rising Star genre focuses on inclusive work within a diverse theatre industry by identifying and developing skilled but new talent in theatre. Productions in this genre includes Honestly, ek verstaan jou nie!, Kantel, Dude wa’s my bakkie?, Frida Kahlo op ŉ veiling and Sondag. Other productions that will take place in the NATi arena include Via.tv’s Laetitia Solomons in the hilarious production, Vol klagtes en gedagtes and KLOP!’s Heindrich Wyngaard in Jokes and Jezz.
What makes the Suidoosterfees unique is that it brings people from distant areas to the city as part of the Suidoosterfees Talent Search, which will take place on the Artscape piazza on 27 April 2019. The 2019 festival will close on 1 May 2019 with the Afsluitingskonsert and ATKV Choir Gala with the six winners of the 2019 ATKV/Rapport Harmony Choir Competition, the West Coast Youth Orchestra, the winners of the ATKV-muziq and ATKV-muziqanto, Cameron Williams (saxophone) and Bongani Kubheka (baritone), Megan-Jeffrey Prins (pianist, pictured above), Janel Speelman (soprano), Chester Meyer (organ) and Niël Rademan as master of ceremonies.
