Five-piece swing and pop band, The Swing Collective, are pretty new on the Cape Town scene. The ensemble comprises of professional musicians all active in the industry. The quintet includes Lana Crowster on vocals (last year’s The Voice SA), Claire de Kock on tenor saxophone, Kurt Diedericks on keys, Luke Otto on bass and James Lombard on drums.
A vintage and retro old-school swing twist
The group plays swing classics, as well as pop tunes given an old-school swing twist: mixing together vintage and retro into a sound that is interesting and distinctive.
Go and see the group at Cafe Roux in Shortmarket Street on Wednesday, 19 July, for dinner and a show. The Collective will head straight back to the roaring ’20s, adding a contemporary twist.
The Swing Collective will be including their own arrangements of songs from Queen to Britney Spears, Beyonce and Outkast – giving them all a swing jazz kick. They will also be playing other well-known jazz favourites such as Hit The Road Jack and I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book.
The band will be entertaining the crowd with two sets of music from 8.30pm, but patrons can go early for dinner at the venue beforehand from 6.30pm. Cafe Roux also has a selection of craft beverages to enjoy.
