‘The Science of Water Sustainability’

In the documentary The Science of Water Sustainability, TechKnow explores three solutions for water scarcity that don’t involve waiting for rain – fog-catching nets, intelligent watering and washing machines that use 80% less water.

The Western Cape is hardly the only place facing a water crisis: a United Nations report suggests that water consumption has grown twice as fast as population growth. By 2025, it’s estimated that two-thirds of the world’s population will live in water-stressed regions.

“Our entire system of living was based upon a paradigm of plentiful water,” Dr Daniel Fernandez, a professor of natural sciences at Cal State Monterey Bay, tells TechKnow. “It wasn’t considered: ‘What if we need to use less?’”

TechKnow is a series exploring how the latest scientific and technological discoveries are changing our lives.

The Science of Water Sustainability premieres on TechKnow on Al Jazeera on Saturday, 22 April, at 10.30pm GMT/11.30pm WAT and Sunday, 23 April 2017 at 00.30am CAT and 01.30am EAT. The full episode will be available to watch on YouTube after it airs.
