With The Murder of Roger Ackroyd opening at the Theatre on the Bay, everyone’s favourite Belgian detective is back! The Agatha Christie mystery runs from 16 July to 16 August 2026, with booking through Webtickets.
Adapted for the stage by Mark Shanahan, the Murder of Roger Ackroyd is directed by Alan Swerdlow and features an all-star cast headed by the award-winning Alan Committee. He is joined by Graham Hopkins, Russel Savadier, Michael Richard, Louise Saint-Claire, Mike Huff and Sarah Wolhuter, amongst others.
Hercule Poirot, ostensibly retired to the sleepy village of King’s Abbot, has to exercise his “leetle grey cells” to find out just who it was who murdered Roger Ackroyd, the master of Fernly Hall and the paterfamilias of a strangely dysfunctional family. Poirot, aided by the village doctor and police inspector, is determined to find his way through the thickets of supposition to determine who the killer is. Amid the multitude of motives and a labyrinth of alibis, Poirot comes to accept that solving crimes is what he does best and growing prize-winning marrows is not for him. This is a brand new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s best-loved story.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was Agatha Christie’s third book to feature Hercule Poirot as the lead detective. The novel was published in the UK in June 1926. The novel was well received from its first publication, and has been called Christie’s masterpiece. In 2013, the British Crime Writers’ Association voted it the best crime novel ever. It is one of Christie’s best-known and most controversial novels, its innovative twist ending having a significant impact on the genre. It has been adapted for television, big screen and the stage, over the years.
