Daniel Newton’s directorial debut of his psycho thriller The Rangers will open at the Baxter’s Masambe Theatre on 15 March and run until 1 April 2023.
A psychological thriller with dark comedic undertones, The Rangers follows childhood best friends, Zakes and Charlie, as they look for Zakes’ brother, who disappeared ten years ago after a family tragedy. When they find him, sickening secrets are uncovered, and the closeness of the two friends and the estranged brother is profoundly disturbed.
Newton, inspired by the absurdity and quick witted dialogue of his literary heroes Martin McDonagh and Edward Albee, here works closely with award winning veteran actor Nicholas Pauling and Newton’s contemporaries Aidan Scott and Lyle October as well as award winning stage designer Patrick Curtis to bring to life this psychological thrille
More about Daniel Newton
Daniel Newton was born in 1998 in Johannesburg, to theatre veterans Lionel Newton and Lara Foot. He is an actor and theatre maker. He started acting professionally for the screen in 2016. In 2021 he finished his BA Hons in Drama and Acting from UCT.
In March of 2022 he performed in his first professional theatre piece Shadow Boxing, a one person play at the KKNK festival followed by a three week run at the Masambe Theatre at the Baxter in May of 2022 which received critical acclaim. In June of 2022 he appeared in Tiisetso Mashifane’s Delela, a three-hander dark comedy which opened at NAF 2022 main festival. The Rangers is his writing and directorial debut.
