The Young Professionals at Theatre Arts 2026Reaxenia is a new work that will be showcased from 27 to 29 March 2026 as part of The Young Professionals season at Theatre Arts.  Now in its fourth year, the Young Professionals continues to serve as a dynamic platform dedicated to supporting emerging theatre makers by providing them a space to present their graduating works on a professional stage and introducing them to a wider audience.

Reaxenia is a visually striking allegorical theatre work that imagines a workshop where the country itself is brought in for repair. In this imaginative and satirical world, the attempts to solve one problem continuously reveal others, reflecting the complex and layered challenges facing contemporary South African society.

Drawing inspiration from journalism and South Africa’s iconic political figures, Reaxenia interrogates the state of the nation through sharp satire and compelling performance. The play comments on the duality of hunger – both the physical absence of food and the deeper, relentless hunger for truth. Through humour, tension, and reflection, the production invites audiences to confront the contradictions of power, accountability, and survival.

Amplifying emerging voices

By staging this work, the Young Professionals at Theatre Arts continues its mission to amplify emerging voices while creating a space for urgent artistic dialogue about South Africa’s present and future.

Tshiamo Maloka, the young director says, “Audiences are invited into a world that is physically imaginative and dynamic in character, space and time. Reaxenia is a play that allows the audience to have a giggle as they encounter a politically charged conversation about democracy, media, journalism and governance.”

Audiences are invited to witness this bold new work and support the next generation of South African theatre makers.
