Ster-Kinekor invites movie lovers to once again step back in time with Throwback Cinema for October 2025, the popular month-long celebration of classy classics brought back to the big screen. Each film screens for one week only, from Friday to Thursday, and tickets are just R50, giving movie lovers the perfect opportunity to watch timeless stories in the way they were meant to be seen … on the big screen.
Anyone who remembers the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally will always remember the iconic line, “I’ll have what she’s having!”. Releasing on 10 October, this witty and charming romantic comedy asks the ultimate question: can men and women ever just be friends? Starring Billy Crystal opposite Meg Ryan, this classic is filled with sharp humour, unforgettable moments, and one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Harry and Sally have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship. The film is directed by Rob Reiner and also stars Carrie Fisher.
What would Thowback Cinema be without a classic 007 film thrown into the mix for good measure? Releasing on 17 October, Bond, James Bond, is back in one of the most thrilling instalments of the 007 franchise in the 2012 action-packed Skyfall. Daniel Craig stars in this stylish and adrenalin-filled adventure where loyalty is tested, secrets are revealed, and he must confront his past to save MI6. A must for Bond fans.
Onto something far more sinister from 24 October when the chilling psychological thriller that has become a landmark in cinema history releases on the big screen. In The Silence of the Lambs, Jodie Foster stars as FBI trainee Clarice Starling, who seeks the help of the brilliant but terrifying Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to track down a serial killer. Directed by Jonathan Demme, this 1991 psychological drama is gripping, haunting, and unforgettable.
Ending off the month of October on a much lighter note is a charming romantic comedy about finding connections in unexpected places and falling in love all over again. The 1998 feel-good movie, You’ve Got Mail, releases on 31 October. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan light up the screen as business rivals who unknowingly fall for each other online in this delightful 90s classic. Book superstore magnate Joe Fox and independent book shop owner Kathleen Kelly connect in the anonymity of the Internet, both blissfully unaware that he’s trying to put her out of business. The film is directed by Nora Ephron, and also stars Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey and Jean Stapleton.
