The Cape Town City Hall is the spot to lap up the third edition of the Africa Day eKapa celebrations with Ivorian drummer Paco Sery & The African Beat, Dizu Plaatjies, Ibuyambo and Hezron Chetty – all on Sunday, 28 May from 6pm to 9.45pm.

Paco Séry & The African Beat headline the show, which opens with a performance by violinist Hezron Chetty and 2016 SAMA Award winner, Dizu Plaatjies, who’ll appear with Ibuyambo.

Fronted by iconic drummer Paco Séry, the headline African Beat band delivers an instrumental journey which speaks to the diverse itinerary of its leader, as much as its multinational membership.

Straddles Afrobeat and jazz

Ivorian-born Séry is known for his work driving the groove of everyone from Manu Dibango to Joe Zawinul. Straddling Afro beats and jazz, his CV reflects live and studio work with Salif Keita, Angelique Kidjo, Papa Wemba, Monty Alexander, Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius.

The African Beat features an impressive assemblage of guest players, including Cameroon-born and Paris based bassist Etienne Mbappé. Another Dibango alumnus, Mbappe credits include work with John McLaughlin, Steps Ahead, Zawinul Syndicate and Ray Lema. The band includes keyboardist Cheick Tidiane Seck and balafon player Aly Keita (both from Mali), Italian keyboardist Nicholas Vella, and French guitarist Danny Marta.

Re-connection Africa

The Re-connection Africa team, who present this one-off Africa Month show, have been at the cutting edge of introducing pan African sounds to South African audiences for over two decades, and also directed the acclaimed City Hall Sessions. The show is supported by the Mzansi Golden Economy fund of the national Department of Arts & Culture.

In line with the developmental agenda of the Africa Month Mini Season, the organizers will be presenting Hezron Chetty and Ibuyambo at two Hout Bay schools. These are private shows, as part of the Schools programme of Concerts SA.

Doors open at 6pm with Future Nostalgia DJs and a cash bar to warm up for the evening. The final set is scheduled to conclude at 9.45pm.
