The Alma Cafe’s Celebrating Women in Music showcase is pegged as “an enchanting evening of soul-stirring melodies and lyrical storytelling”. It happens on Friday, 24 November 2023.
The venue will spotlight the talent of some of Cape Town’s up-and-coming female singer-songwriters. “This event is a testament to the passion, creativity, and boundless spirit of female musicians in the indie-folk genre.”
The artists
Emma-Jean: Catchy, rhythmic indie folk songs that have placed highly in Barleycorn competitions, and won the Cape Town Unwired competition in 2019
Emma Du Preez: Poignant and quirky; her sound has been likened to artists like Suzanne Vega, with an emphasis on lyrical craftsmanship and nostalgic story-telling, and early Jewel, with an intensely emotive vocal delivery and hints of pop-country and bluegrass influences.
Little Rock: With influences including everything from Joan Baez to Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel to Jack White and Laura Marling, Rochelle Duvenage explores the many strange, beautiful and contradictory facets of the human condition, covering themes such as growing up, memory, loss, heartbreak, depression, adventure, social issues, and love.
Sarah Burger (A Fishwife): Inspired by artists such as Keb’mo, Laura Marling, and Mark Knopfler, Sarah shares stories of Sirens, Cats and the blues on sunny days with poetry and (mostly) gentle guitar melodies.
Each artist will bring a unique voice, perspective, and sound to the stage, promising a night of authentic and moving performances.
