Prolific artist and author Ann Gadd is exhibiting at The Cape Gallery CC, 60 Church Street, Cape Town from 8 to  31 January, 2026. She is most known for her Ewe/Sheep series of work, for which she coined the term Baabaaism.

Artist’s statement

“To mirror the paradoxical universe, I explore the profound through humour. In doing so, I reveal our human nature, aspirations, and weaknesses. The art then embodies the caught gesture/court jester.”

Insightful, symbolic art

A recurring theme in her work is a play on words and popular jargon. Her quirky, humorous, yet profoundly insightful and symbolic art allows the viewer both to laugh and examine many of life’s absurd aspects.

Yet beneath the humour often lies deeper, less comfortable truths.

Ann’s portfolio demonstrates an understanding of visual dialogue, rooted in the interplay between cultural symbolism and contemporary street art aesthetics.

The strength of her work lies in the vibrant collision of these seemingly disparate worlds, evoking a sense of historical continuity while engaging with modern artistic sensibilities.
