The Folklore Festival is gearing up for the conclusion of its third edition during this Heritage Month with an exciting reprise of its #WETHEFOLK celebration, honoring 30 years of democracy. The Folklore Festival Reprise is scheduled to take place on 20 and 21 September, 2024, at Gorgeous George’s Pink Room in Cape Town.
Attendees can anticipate a rich line-up of distinguished artivists and storytellers, including renowned authors, filmmakers, actors, oral traditionalists, poets, vinyl selectors, sound curators, and musicians. This event promises to be a compelling tribute to our rich cultural heritage and democratic milestones.
Each year, the Folklore Festival concludes with a highly anticipated Reprise. This year, the Folklore Festival Reprise will be held in Cape Town. A reprise, in musical terms, refers to the repetition or reiteration of the opening material later in a composition, and this concept aptly describes the festival’s closing event.
The 2024 Folklore Festival Reprise will showcase an exciting lineup featuring Morena Leraba, Kujenga, Digital Sangoma, Chosi, and Sifiso Khanyile. Additionally, attendees can look forward to screenings of Uprize and A New Country, as well as performances by DJ Mighty and Atiyyah Khan (El Corazon).

Multi-disciplinary event
The Folklore Festival is a multi-disciplinary culture and heritage festival that seeks to build a community that shares, documents and archives our Folklore in diverse art-forms. By definition, folklore is the body of expressive culture shared by a particular group of people, culture or subculture. It is inclusive of oral traditions such as tales, myths, legends, proverbs, poems, jokes, and rituals, tales, celebrations, dance and more.
“The goal this year is to build and grow our community by creating intimate bonding moment, giving deeper focus to the multiple disciplines of art showcased at our festival. As well as deepening the impact, intention, and meaningful work presented by our storytellers and collaborators. The main festival in Johannesburg & the reprise in Cape Town comes as a celebration of the work we have done and the community we have invested in.” – says Pilani Bubu, Folklore Festival founder and director.
