XABISO NGQABE reviews

Six years after Seriously Single, Dineo and Noni are back – older, perhaps a little wiser, and still figuring out what love asks of them. Their Cape Town getaway is meant to celebrate Noni’s engagement, but the trip soon raises a more complicated question: what happens when your best friend starts imagining a life that looks different from the one you planned together?

Now streaming on Netflix, Seriously Single Too, directed by Katleho and Rethabile Ramaphakela, builds on the world audiences met in 2020, exploring a subject that deserves as much attention as romance itself: the friendships that shape us and the changes that come with growing up. The sequel stars Fulu Modibedi as Dineo and Tumi Morake as Noni, alongside a stellar ensemble that includes Yonda Thomas, Buntu Petse, Keke Mphuthi, Thabiso Rammusi, Motlatsi Mafatshe and Harriet Manamela.

When your best friend moves on

Noni’s engagement to Max (Yonda Thomas) and the possibility of a move to Kenya unsettle Dineo. For years, the two women have shared a scepticism about romance, with Noni helping Dineo find her footing after heartbreak. Now Noni is choosing a different path, while Dineo’s growing friendship with Sasa (Buntu Petse) brings another dimension to their changing bond.

The film captures how unsettling it can be when someone who has become part of your identity begins a new chapter. Dineo’s mix of humour, jealousy and vulnerability reflects a recognisable fear: not simply that her friend is moving on, but that she might be left behind. It is an engaging foundation for a sequel that looks beyond romantic mishaps to explore what happens when the people closest to us begin wanting different things.

The cast carries the film effortlessly

Fulu Modibedi and Tumi Morake remain at the heart of Seriously Single Too. Their performances bring warmth to Dineo and Noni’s friendship, built on shared history, playful exchanges and the kind of honesty that comes from knowing someone deeply.

Morake brings her distinctive comic confidence to Noni, while Modibedi gives Dineo an expressive, wonderfully human quality as she navigates the changes around her. Together, they capture the comfort and complexity of a friendship that has weathered different seasons of life.

The supporting cast adds further personality. Buntu Petse’s character as Sasa brings a fresh perspective to Dineo’s world, while Harriet Manamela and Keke Mphuthi bring lively energy as Aunt Gontse and Bontle. Motlatsi Mafatshe, Yonda Thomas and Thabiso Rammusi round out the film’s romantic and family dynamics. It is lovely to see a South African romantic comedy bring together such a familiar ensemble while keeping its central friendship firmly in focus.

Breathtaking Cape Town scenery and a vibrant local soundtrack

Cape Town provides a beautiful backdrop for the friends’ getaway, bringing colour and atmosphere to a story about love and changing priorities. From the locations to the styling, the film embraces the glossy, celebratory pleasures of the romantic comedy.

And then there is the soundtrack, which deserves its flowers. UPZ’s Pure Surprise is a particularly joyful inclusion, bringing a familiar musical flavour to the film. Brenda Fassie’s Weekend Special also makes an appearance, a rather fitting addition, given the occasion. These musical touches give the film another layer of local character, celebrating sounds that have become part of South Africa’s cultural memory. Alongside the scenery and lively performances, they help make the experience feel distinctly familiar.

Love, commitment and choosing your own terms

One of the film’s most thoughtful threads is Noni’s uncertainty about marriage. She loves Max, but questions whether a wedding and a legal document should define their commitment. Their conversations make room for a different understanding of partnership, one in which two people can decide what works for them rather than simply follow expectations.

It is a refreshing conversation for a romantic comedy. Choosing a partner does not necessarily mean embracing every tradition associated with marriage, and Noni’s journey allows that distinction to take centre stage. Dineo, meanwhile, is learning what it means to open herself up to love again. Her connection with Khai, a man carrying his own hurt, creates space for two guarded people to discover what happens when they let someone else in. Her journey speaks to the courage it takes to move beyond past disappointments and embrace new possibilities.

The two women approach love differently, and the film allows both journeys to coexist. There is no single formula for getting life right, whether that means questioning tradition, pursuing romance or discovering what makes you happy.

Stream or skip it?

Seriously Single Too is a warm return to Dineo and Noni, anchored by Modibedi and Morake’s chemistry, a lively supporting cast, beautiful Cape Town scenery and a soundtrack with plenty of personality. What makes the sequel worth spending time with is its appreciation for the relationships that remain important long after the romantic highs and heartbreaks. It celebrates female friendship without losing sight of the excitement, uncertainty and joy of falling in love.
