KAREN RUTTER reviews
Bosch on Showmax has just moved onto season 4, recently released with its cast of renegade cops and sneaky robbers. Based on the best-selling crime novels by Michael Connelly, the series is headed up by Detective Hieronymus ‘Harry’ Bosch, wonderfully played by the enigmatic and strangely pear-shaped Titus Welliver, with a satellite cast of charismatic characters.
There’s Detective Jerry Edgar (Jamie Hector), Bosch’s stylish cop partner who sells real estate on the side and is battling with a separation in his marriage; stoic Deputy Chief Irvin Irving (Lance Reddick), who always seems to be putting out political fires; and tough but fair Lieutenant Grace Billets (Amy Aquino), Bosch’s immediate superior and a friend. As in most police procedurals, Bosch has a few problems of his own, here portrayed by his uncertain relationship with his ex-wife Eleanor (Sarah Clarke) and daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz). Oh, and he’s haunted by the long-ago murder of his mother, a sex worker who was killed when he was a boy.
Bosch on Showmax
The joy of any series that is well put together is watching the growth and development of characters over a period of time. And Bosch is no exception; in fact, catching the trials and tribulations of not only the lead personality but also his peers and adversaries is part of the process that makes this so engaging. That, and the grittiness of the scripts. Connelly’s Bosch books are a mixture of action, adrenaline and melancholy. There’s a sadness to Harry – his imperfect relationships, his fractured past, his difficulty with authority and towing an official line. A flawed hero, in true detective/crime fashion, but nicely drawn, and not a stereotype. Plus – he seriously gets down to business when it’s needed, leaving his brooding to nights staring out at the lights of LA from his hillside balcony, whilst sipping whisky.
Seasons 1 to 3 were based on three of Connelly’s titles: City of Bones, Echo Park and The Concrete Blonde. Season 4, Ask the Dust, ramps up the action when a high profile and controversial – lawyer is found murdered on a funicular. The season also follows up on threads already unravelled in previous seasons. It’s possibly the best of the series so far, with Bosch and his team on very fine form.
Unsurprisingly, Connelly heads up the production team on the series.
