A new chapter in South Africa’s cultural landscape is set to begin as the Cape Town Jazz Train (CTJT) makes its grand debut on 30 January, 2025. Spearheaded by Koko Nkalashe and Nono Nkoane through Jazz in the Native Yards, this groundbreaking initiative is presented in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), PRASA, and other key partners.
The CTJT redefines public transport as a vibrant platform for art and music, offering jazz lovers, culture enthusiasts, and adventure seekers an unforgettable journey into the heart of Cape Town’s creative pulse.
Experience the journey
The Cape Town Jazz Train officially launches in January 30, 2025 with a celebration that begins at the Athletic Club & Social and culminates in a live concert by acclaimed South African ensemble, Kujenga at the Old Biscuit Mill in Salt River. Guests will enjoy a dynamic program of live music, engaging speeches, and a special train experience featuring on-board performances by local artists.

Building on the excitement of the launch, the CTJT program will run until April 2025, with a dynamic program of events at some of Cape Town’s most iconic venues, the CTJT celebrates the city’s rich jazz heritage while introducing fresh, innovative concepts.
Renowned South African pianist Paul Hanmer will feature in an intimate trio performance on 8 February, 2025 at Axminster House, Muizenberg, paying tribute to his acclaimed work Trains to Taung. Complimentary Heineken beverages will be served, and there will be an opportunity for socializing after the performance.
Return Journey & Evening Social Hour – After the concert, guests will be shuttled back to Muizenberg Station to board the train (0130 of 17h48) Muizenberg to Cape Town. The experience concludes with a social hour back at the Athletic Club & Social, featuring Heineken Welcome refreshments, lively conversations, and a chance to reflect on the unforgettable journey. Guests are then free to disperse at their leisure.

Community at its heart
The CTJT isn’t just about music; it’s about empowering people and communities. Partnering with Yes 4 Youth, a non-profit organization that provides quality work experiences for unemployed youth, the CTJT will welcome 30 young volunteers to assist during the launch event. This initiative emphasizes the CTJT’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities and fostering future leaders in South Africa’s creative industries.
