Dan Patlansky’s latest album, Perfection Kills was released worldwide in February, 2018. The release is the follow-up to 2016’s acclaimed Introvertigo, which was voted #1 Blues Rock Album in the world by Blues Rock Review USA, and his ninth studio offering.
Perfection Kills was recorded at Scherzo Productions, a studio in Dan’s home town of Pretoria, South Africa. Dan chose Scherzo because he wanted to make a different sounding record from his last two albums and he felt Scherzo supported his vision. All the songs on Perfection Kills were recorded and engineered by Jaco Naudé, mixed by Stefan Swart in South Africa and mastered by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Mastering U.S.A.
‘A real, organic result’
Dan produced the album himself, something he hasn’t done in years. “I learnt so much working with Theo Crous, who was the producer on my previous two albums, Dear Silence Thieves and Introvertigo. I worked on pre-production and songwriting with Theo on a couple of the tracks for Perfection Kills and applied what I learnt to the recording and production process of the album. Perfection Kills is all about my vision of making a record that still makes the songwriting a priority as in the past; the final product delivers a far more real and organic result.”
Dan specifically recorded the 10 tracks to come across very close to what they will sound like when performing them live.
The guitarist started writing and recording the new album in 2016. “I got together with the band once I had basic ideas and messed about with them in a rehearsal space for a week,” reflects Dan. “I went back, tweaked a few and then we were ready for the studio. The recording process was semi-live and took two weeks to complete.”
Perfection Kills is a concept Dan wholeheartedly believes in: “In any art form perfection doesn’t exist because there is no yard stick to measure it by. The pursuit of perfection ends up doing far more harm to the art than good. This was the mindset we adhered to when we ent into the recording studio, ‘Why try to be perfect?’”
Perfection Kills track listing
Johnny – This song is about a kid who had a challenging upbringing, and how survival turned him into a tough and sometimes volatile adult.
Never Long Enough This song is about being home with the love of my life and how the seemingly mundane is something I yearn for. The clock is constantly ticking to my next departure and these moments with her are never long enough.
Mayday – The modern day rat-race is blindsiding people from the most important thing in life; LOVE. As a result, relationships are crashing.
Too Far Gone – With the annihilation of the environment, famine, war, greed and human stupidity, the world is becoming scarier every day. Are we too far gone?
Judge A Man – This song is a moan about girls I have dated before, that believed being a musician is not a real job. Judge a man on what he achieves, and not on your own ignorant views.
Junket Man – A Junket man is someone who travels for their livelihood, which is an accurate description of my career. Travel is just an inescapable part of the job.
iEyes – Our complete addiction to living life through a screen, not noticing the high res world all around us.
Shake The Cage – I believe in the theory that life works in 7 year cycles. This song is about embracing change and actively changing your mind set every now and then, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.
My Dear Boy – This is a song for the newest addition to the family, my son Jack.
Dog Day – We all have those days where nothing goes our way. However, our first world problems are nothing compared to what many people have to deal with.
