The Cape Town-based Die Bos Parade are playing at The Alma Cafe in Rosebank on Friday 23 June, 2023. Expect Afrikaans folk tunes, TV themes and “pimped” hit makeovers. From Sarie Marais to pseudo-Shostakovich and Ligeti, the evening promises to be a rather eclectic affair! All in all a blend of classical, folk, Afrikana and satire.

The most likely translation of their name in English is The Barmy Parade. Die Bos Parade came into being in 2020 in its current incarnation. The project has released two EPs. Their 2022 debut EP entitled Toeriste Treffers and the recent Ek’s net dom. These are available on all major streaming platforms.

A gaudy hotchpotch

While some of the songs may be sincere pensive gentle reinterpretations, others are politely slaughtered. “It’s important to remember that slaughter cannot be spelt without laughter,” they say. “The sound of the music is best described as a gaudy hotchpotch makeshift patchwork quilt that is now being used as a tea cosy.”

For their performance at Alma Cafe, this will be the musical personnel:

  • Wilma Koeksuster – voice/mezzo-soprano/megaphone
  • Sybrandt Boerewors – guitar/arranger/composer
  • Sersant – Double bass
  • Fransie Vermaak – Cello

The musicians have been involved in numerous musical excursions, here are a few – Cape Town Philharmonic, The 27 Club, Die Babbelbende, Benguela, Cape Chamber Music Collective.

When not on parade the current members of the group are also known as Vasti-Zeeman Knoesen, Graeme Lees, Brydon Bolton and David Pinoit.
