Exodus Bongani Sotshononda chromatic marimba vibraphonist

Exodus The Movement of the People will be staged at The Artscape Arena in Cape Town on Friday, 17 May and Saturday, 18 May, 2024. Go and join in a celebration of 30 years of democracy as Bongani Sotshononda takes listeners on a musical journey spanning the inception of South Africa’s democracy to present day.

The production, showcased during Africa Month, will be led Sotshononda. The acclaimed chromatic marimba player and vibraphonist also composed the material for the show.

Alongside Bongani Sotshononda’s 9-piece orchestral ensemble, which features a diverse lineup of South African musicians, there will be a performance highlighting the evolution of music over the past two decades and into the 21st century. The work will span different genres.

Arrangement and instrumentation

The music has been arranged by Lonwabo Diba Mafani, and will be enriched by an eclectic blend of indigenous instruments, western classical instruments and a vocal ensemble, featuring lead vocalist Ruby Cristen Truter.

This high-energy musical experience that celebrates the country’s cultural tapestry and its journey towards democracy will feature jazz, Afro jazz, mbaqanga, classical, goema music styles.
