The Galileo Open Air Cinema is one of those fabby Cape Town experiences that make summer all that much more fun. It’s an open-air movie event that takes place at a different venue each night of the week. The settings themselves are pretty unique, while the line-up of movies is pure pleasure, ranging from family-friendly to romantic to comedy to drama, making this a fabby combination.

You can bring your own picnic, but each venue hosts local food vendors selling a wide range of artisanal foods, including Halaal and vegetarian options. These include (for most venues) pizzas, nachos, shwarmas, burgers, salads, popcorn, candy floss, sweets, cool drinks, coffee, beer and wine. You can also hire comfy backrests, and bring your own cushions and blankets. There really isn’t anything more that you need!

The awesome venues include Kirstenbosch, the Hillcrest Quarry, Boschendal Wine Estate, the V & A Waterfront, the Castle of Good Hope and the Noordhoek Common. The line-up of movies includes

The Galileo runs from Tuesday to Friday and selected Saturdays and Sundays. It’s best to visit the website to see what is on where. The gates open at 6pm on weekdays, 5pm on Saturdays and 4pm on Sundays, giving punters plenty of time to settle in, grab some grub and enjoy sundowners before the main event starts between 7.30 and 8.30pm (depending on the time of year).

This year’s programme includes Gone Girl, Harry Potter, Life of Pi, Charlie’s Angels, Grease, Home Alone, the Social Network, Lord of the Flies, Frozen, Boyhood, Sharknado, The Notebook, The Ring, Blue Crush, The Wolf of Wall Street, Pitch Perfect and lots, lots more.

In the event of really bad weather, the show will be cancelled and people will be informed via sms or email before the event – but this rarely happens. It’s summertime in Cape Town, after all!
