Guitarist Nibs van der Spuy is returning to the Cape, after a successful spring tour in Italy. This will be the second leg of his, Natalia tour and his first solo release in 5 years. Natalia was recorded by world renown producer, Mark Tucker (Portishead/PJ Harvey), bringing together strong themes and images of Kwazulu and introducing new soundscapes to his music. Listen to his rootsy South African folk from 1 – 5 March, 2017.
Raised in the fertile province of KwaZulu Natal, Nibs immersed himself in his natural environment to formulate a consummate and original sound. Growing up with The Beatles and learning first hand from traditional Zulu Maskandi guitarists, he quickly soaked up a rich tapestry of his close surroundings and beyond.
After playing the local folk scene around South Africa his big stage break came after supporting Crosby, Stills and Nash on their 1996 South African tour. After that he was signed to the Sheer (South African World Music label) where he released over 10 albums.
His third solo release, Beautiful Feet received acclaimed accolades around the world, where it was album of the month in four German publications and Radio France FIP pick of the week.
He continues to spread his musical beauty around the world where he has shared stages with the likes of Ben Harper, Bonnie Rait, Taj Mahal, Gito Baloi, Kelly Joe Phelps, Piers Faccini, Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin and Shawn Phillips and recording In the shade of the wild fig, with Guy Buttery. He released Natalia in In September, 2016.Says Nibs: “I now live in Europe, but it is great to be back in SA.”
Aa beautiful studio in the heart of the Devon
“I decided to record my 10th solo album, Natalia in a completely different environment to my previous. I chose a beautiful studio in the heart of the Devon countryside in the South West of England. It was the first time I got to work with a great producer, Mark Tucker who had engineered two Jethro Tull albums and the later albums of Fairport Convention. It was also the first time I gave the production over to somebody else where they took full control of crafting my songs into the way they heard them. It was an incredible two weeks in the studio and I am really happy the way the album turned out and it almost feels like my first album.
The last few years I have been playing a lot in Europe, Predominantly France. For some reason, my music has found a voice there, so two years ago I decided to relocate to Europe. I live in Portugal which is a real undiscovered gem. I am 15km outside Lisbon on the Atlantic ocean. Although I rarely play there, it is a stone throws away from France, Italy, the UK and other countries I get to play in.
