The multi-award winning sensation Gloria Bosman will perform in Cape Town as part of the Jazz in the Native Yards sessions. She will be at the Guga S’thebe Theatre in Langa on Sunday 12 August 2018 from 4pm, appearing alongside young Cape Town musicians.
The band will comprise Ludwe Danxa (keyboards), Lonwabo Mafani (keyboards), Revan October (bass) and Griffin Maarman (drums). With this performance Bosman says she will be honouring women who braved all obstacles and marched to the Union buildings in 1956.
“The women who marched changed the fate of women. We celebrate them,” she says. “Going into the jazz scene as a woman has always been a challenge as it is male dominated. In the spirit of wanting to be respected without being belittled on the basis of gender, we celebrate how far we’ve come.”

Bosman says she is overwhelmed and cannot wait to perform in Langa. “It is long overdue! Especially looking at how many of my colleagues and musical influences are from Langa,” reckons Bosman. “We are way past those times when jazz music was more available in the suburban areas. Present structures have become more inclusive and flexible. Let us take advantage of these opportunities and positively exploit them.”
Bosman says she will perform new and old numbers. “I will be journeying through time, touching different eras and exploring my original contributions. I am looking forward to also showcasing my new material,” she explains.
With an ever-growing list of honours, including two SA Music Awards, eleven SAMA nominations and two KORA nominations, Gloria Bosman is one of South Africa’s most celebrated singers. She has amassed an impressive biography, having performed and sung with top South African musicians both locally and internationally. Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Moses Molelekwa, Tananas and Sipho Mabuse are just a few of the musical greats she has shared a stage with.
Having trained as an opera singer, Bosman’s jazz singing style is distinctive and unique. She won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz in 2000, and will be singing at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in Joburg this year in September 2018.
