The Office of the Consul of Japan will present the Cape Town leg of the 24th Annual Japanese Film Festival. Three movies will be screened for free in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The 24th annual Japanese Film Festival will commence on 27 October 2017 at Cinema Nouveau at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town for three days. The festival will then move to the Cinema Nouveau in the Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg for three days from 3 November. The inaugural Japanese Film Festival in South Africa took place in 1994, and this 24th edition is a great combination of robotics, animation and contemporary drama. The festival is hosted by the Embassy of Japan as well as the Japan Foundation in partnership with Ster-Kinekor’s Cinema Nouveau.
The movies being screened at this year’s festival are Sue, Mai & Sawa: Righting the Girl Ship, Time of Eve the Movie and Karate-Robo Zaborgar.

Friday 27 October | 8pm | V&A Nouveau
CAST: Ko Shibasaki, Yoko Maki, Shinobu Terajima
DIRECTOR: Osamu Minorikawa

SYNOPSIS: A heart-warming drama based on Miri Masuda’s comic strip series. For three 30-something Japanese women, getting older is no laughing matter. The film offers a warm and tender depiction of these women struggling with their futures and love lives. The wry humour often takes the form of interior monologues with blunt honesty, which totally contradicts the characters’ polite words and pasted-on smiles.

DIRECTOR: Yasuhiro Yoshihura
RUNNING TIME: 106 min

SYNOPSIS: A fascinating piece for animation fans. In the not too distant future androids have come into common usage. High school learner Rikuo, one who has taken androids for granted for his entire life, one day discovers that Sammy, his home android, has been acting strangely and finds a strange phrase recorded in her activity log. He, along with his friend Masaki, traces Sammy’s footsteps and come upon an unusual café …

This zany feature is guaranteed to enthrall fans who enjoy the world of Iguchi, sometimes called the “out of mind director”.
