Johannesburg trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni is heading south for a series of performances in Cape Town. The multi award-winning player will perform with the TRC, promoting his latest album The Future is Now on Friday, 24 February 2023, at Intravinous Wine Lounge and Bar on 110 Loop Street at 8pm.
On 25 February he will be at at Gallery South, 19 Atlantic Rd, Muizenberg at 3pm. He will also perform with Little Giants on 26 February at Gallery South at 3pm. These gigs are curated by NPO, the Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA).

Two new venues
“We are so excited to have now established firm collaboration with two new venues, Intravinous Wine Lounge and Bar and Gallery South,” says Projects Director Luvuyo Kakaza.
“Both venues have a great potential to be prime jazz venues in Cape Town. Intravinous offers fantastic wines from the Elgin to Elim region and delectable selection of South African and Cape Malay dishes. Gallery South hosts great works by some of South Africa’s legendary artists who were ignored during the heyday of apartheid,” explains Kakaza
The Tune Recreation Committee (TRC) features Damian Kamineth on drums, Nicholas Williams on bass, Reza Khota on guitar, Mandla Mlangeni on trumpet. The T.R.C is the playground for the interrogation, assimilation and extended extemporization from the canon of South African jazz heritage.
The unit has performed to rousing applause at festivals such as SAFARICOM Jazz Fest in Nairobi Kenya 2019, Sauti Za Busara 2019, the IGODA Festival Circuit, Sakifo Reunion Island and the CTIJF.
Milestone Studios
The TRC’s third offering is in the form of an album release entitled The Future Is Now, an endeavour focused on collaboration and musical exchange. It was recorded at Milestone Studios in Cape Town in 2020. Added to the mix is the voices featured on the album: vocal sensation Haile Supreme together with Yonela Mnana and The Soultee Sisters. With guest artists such as saxophonist Sisonke Xonti, percussionist Gontse Makhene, flautist Khanyi Mthethwa and Mark Fransman
The T.R.C. fuse imported sounds whilst exporting their own flavour – either going into a ghoema-tinged feel or just improvising around the melody.
The New York Times comments: “Led by the trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni, this alliance of young South African musicians delves into the country’s syncretic cultural heritage — then ventures beyond. You hear Balkan folk, American funk, West African high life, and South African free jazz. Most of all, you hear five bristling improvisers dancing together, modelling a kind of thoughtful communion.”
