Youth Day - Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra’s Masidlale project
It’ll be a first for many musicians aged between 7 and 16

The 40 members of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra’s Masidlale grassroots training project will showcase their talent in a Youth Day Celebration in Gugulethu.

The concert, which will take place on June 16 at the J L Zwane Memorial Church at 11am, will feature the Langa community choir directed Monica Dasse, a theory teacher at Masidlale.

Luleka Primary and St Michael’s Primary

It is the first time that many of the young musicians, all aged between 7 and 16, will make a public appearance. They include 15 from Luleka Primary and St Michael’s Primary, who  joined the strings project in 2016.

Since its launch in 2009, Masidlale has been succeeding in enriching the lives of our youth through training each learner to reach their potential; thereby transforming communities, building capacity and providing opportunities for professional musical development.  Grassroots projects now exist for children in Gugulethu, Langa, Khayelitsha, Atlantis, Mamre and Nyanga to provide really young children with string or woodwind instrument training irrespective of their financial means or background.

Teachers, from the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, themselves trained by Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra musicians, teach the children, so completing the circle of skills transfer.

The project is headed by Ash-Lee Louwskieter and Odile Burden. All students receive weekly tuition in the city or in Mamre.
